Once a year, I like to reread this great book by Master Coach Steve Chandler.
One of the metaphors he shares is the idea of the human spirit being like a campfire. Imagine that we’re camping and night falls and we light a fire to provide warmth and light. The evening ends, we go to sleep, and when morning comes we’re not surprised to find that the campfire has gone out.
We don’t flail about complaining that it’s not fair, we slaved over that fire, it was the best fire ever and now it’s gone, why bother even lighting a fire when it’s just going to go out again? We accept the reality that we need to build a fire to meet our needs and it will last for a while and then it will need to be re-lit.
Steve Chandler
And yet when it comes to our human spirit, our authentic energy system, it’s difficult for us to accept the reality that we need to re-light our inner fire. That it’s an essential part of being human to acknowledge the need to consistently engage in renewal activities that bring us light and warmth. It is part of living in this world that the light we create today doesn’t last for a lifetime. It’s not a ‘one and done’ deal.
Rather we resist accepting this reality and persist in all kinds of low vibration feelings, thoughts and behaviours to avoid accepting personal responsibility and engaging actively in behaviours to renew our inner fire.
Do any of these resonate?
- I shouldn’t have to
- I’m not responsible
- Somebody else should do it
- It’s not fair that I have to
- It’s just too much work, the fire should just stay lit
- It shouldn’t be this way, it’s the Universe’s fault
- It’s my fault, I’m not a good enough fire tender
- It’s someone else’s fault, I’ve been treated badly so I shouldn’t have to do this
- I just don’t want to
- Why bother, it’s just going to go out again and I am the way I am
- I don’t have time
- I don’t know how
- I’m too tired
- I won’t do it right and I’ll be a failure again
- If I light my fire then something bad will happen and I might have to …..
Refusing to light our inner fire with a consistent daily routine of powerful practices is like a butterfly refusing to come out of its cocoon. There are so many beautiful potentials available but none of them will happen as long as it remains attached to its refusal to shine.
Might I suggest some Refusal Tapping on each of the statements above?
Take each sentence and turn it into an EFT set-up phrase:
“Even though I shouldn’t have to relight my energy,
I’m willing to acknowledge this is true for me right now.”
3 times on the Side of Hand point.
Reminder Points: I shouldn’t have to…
Stay alert for the feelings and thoughts that surface and feed them back into your tapping phrases. If you’d like to see an example of Refusal Tapping, check out this video
As we clear the strength of our attachment to refusal, we’ll stop complaining and avoiding and simply get to work building a regular daily practice that helps us feel great, think clearly and behave in ways that fulfill us and inspire others.
Of course, the ‘energetic law of free will’ gives us complete control over this. Even though we can’t change the reality that the human spirit needs consistent rebuilding, we DO get to decide whether we will do it or not.
I hope you choose to live in the beautiful warmth and light of your authentic campfire.
